CUMAR SPONSORS MITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS NIGHT OF DESIGN AND MENTORING

Cumar continues to support the mission of mentoring in the design community. At the upcoming February 17th Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams event, Mitchell Gold himself will unveil the home furnishing brand’s Spring 2011 Collection, Modern Classic. As a core part of the evening’s celebrations, the company will establish its firm commitment to mentoring and “Designing the Next Generation” alongside event sponsor Cumar and Over My Shoulder Foundation.

In November, Design New England collaborated with stone fabricator Cumar Inc. and Over My Shoulder Foundation to create the Mentors In Design (MIDDIES) program, a program focused on recognizing and awarding those individuals who have generously taken the time to support future generations of designers. Throughout Boston, designers have heeded the call to promote mentoring in the world of design and this month, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams joins the cause. With mentoring being such a prevalent part of everyday operations at Cumar, we are proud to sponsor this exciting event and are thrilled to see mentoring in design continuing to grow!

Mentoring is a Cornerstone At Cumar

At Design New England’s Fourth Anniversary celebration on November 3rd, Cumar’s Controller Carlotta Cubi gave a speech discussing mentoring at Cumar Inc. as well as presenting Grammy Award-winner Patti Austin with an honorary award for her pursuits in the world of design and her pioneering initiatives in mentoring.

“Thank you everyone for coming to celebrate Design New England’s 4th anniversary and the spirit of mentoring, with the Over My Shoulder Foundation. I’d like to congratulate Design New England on four years of success in the industry, and thank you for the opportunity [for Cumar] to participate by creating the [Mentors In Design] award.

In the stone world, mentoring is the only way that the special craftsmanship has been able to live on from generation to generation. Growing up as the daughter of a 7th generation stone craftsman whose passion for his work has brought him international recognition was inspiring. In my house, a highlighter and a set of architectural blue prints were how we practiced coloring within the lines. No coloring books, just plans of hotel lobbies, elaborate offices, or luxury residences. When I joined the family business, it became obvious that my dad was mentoring me all along. To you [my father] Ivo, I say thank you from me, the entire team at Cumar, and the countless number of other people in the industry you have mentored over the years.

Lastly I would like to thank Patti [Austin] for starting the foundation, and for demonstrating here tonight with [your mentee] Lianna, the results of a strong mentoring relationship. Patti, for your commitment to the music industry and now the design industry, we would like to present you with the 2010 inaugural MIDDIE award. Congratulations Patti and as we welcome you into the design industry, we wish all the best with your transition from mentor in the music world to mentee in the design world.”

As Carlotta explained, mentoring is a core value at Cumar, and we see it as an integral part of a strong design community. We encourage all members of the design world to participate in the Mentors In Design program and nominate those individuals who have made a profound impact. To learn more about nominating, please contact Design New England at info@DeisgnNewEngland.com.

Talk of the Town: Carlotta Cubi Interviews Design New England Editor And Publisher

Cumar Inc.’s Controller Carlotta Cubi sits down with Design New England Editor Gail Ravgiala and Publisher Steve Twombly to reflect on the interior design world of 2010 and discuss the design outlook for 2011.

Carlotta Cubi: First of all, congratulations on Design New England’s four year anniversary!

Gail Ravgiala: Thank you! The November celebration at the W Hotel honoring the milestone was the perfect way to mark the occasion. Everyone who attended raved about the performance from Grammy-winner Patti Austin and her protégé Lianna Gutierrez. Combined with the unveiling of the MIDDIES award, it was the event of the year.

Carlotta Cubi: We, here at Cumar, were so honored to be able to design the Mentors In Design (MIDDIES) award for the program recently started at Design New England. For those who aren’t as familiar with the MIDDIES, what is your main goal of this awards program?

Steve Twombly: Design New England wants to recognize the generosity of spirit shown by established members of the design community. From construction sites to showrooms, from design offices to work rooms, we find there is a sharing not only of knowledge but also of the intangible insights that only the seasoned player can impart to the rookie. Veterans in the design world are incredible assets to promote and encourage future designers.

Carlotta Cubi: How do you see the world of interior design moving forward in the future?

Gail Ravgiala: Home design has changed with our lifestyles. Today, there is a casual flair, an accessible component, to our homes. From wide-open living spaces to captivating landscaping, design has progressed from formal trends of the past to a more inviting, relaxed style.

Carlotta Cubi: Going into Design New England’s fifth year of publication, what are some of your goals for the magazine and the design community?

Steve Twombly: We really want to reaffirm our commitment to educating our readers with both the magazine as well as our home design seminar series. Our recent series, “Real Solutions for the Home,” focused on topics from kitchen and bath design to going green.

Carlotta Cubi: And you know we always love people spreading the word about kitchen and bath design! From the MIDDIES to our recent work with Planeta Basque on the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, it’s been a great year for Cumar, and we are excited to see growing interest from homeowners who are looking to add glamorous, exotic marble and granite stone to their homes.

Gail Ravgiala: Kitchen and bath design are certainly two popular topics readers are always interested in. We are continually focused on finding the best, eye-catching examples to inspire readers and show just how impressive the impact a beautiful kitchen or bathroom can be.

Carlotta Cubi: Thank you for taking the time to talk with me, and we look forward to another great year from Design New England!

A Solid Foundation For The Future For Stone Supplier Cumar Inc.

Our highly anticipated creation for the Design New England Mentors In Design Awards (MIDDIES) was finally revealed Wednesday night at the magazine’s fourth anniversary celebration. The breathtaking sculpture made from rare ammonite and Swarovski crystals will be presented to individuals in the design community who have taken the time to mentor future generations entering into the field of design.

While the reveal of the award was an incredible moment for everyone here at Cumar , our principal role in the event for sponsorship and award creation was truly a testament to the company’s reputation built through years of hard work. Ivo’s persistent dedication to finding the highest quality materials and demanding excellence from his employees has put Cumar on the map for exotic stones. His infectious spirit and pride in the company translates into a family of diligent employees who stand firmly behind every stone that leaves Cumar. Design consultant Dawn Carroll explains that it was Ivo’s belief in her that allowed her to flourish in her career and her personal pursuits.

A very special part of the evening occurred when Ivo’s daughter Carlotta took center stage to thank her father for his guidance in her own career at the family business. The Cumar family is a shining example of the power of mentoring, a key part of their family tradition for seven generations.

Behind The Scenes Of The Middies

On September 24th my co-founder of the Over My Shoulder Foundation, the fabulous Grammy Award winning singer Patti Austin flew into Boston. Our task was to create an award to be unveiled at an elegant evening that Design New England is planning for November 3, 2010 to celebrate the concept of mentoring. Together with legendary stone master Ivo Cubi and Cumar Inc.’s brilliant engineering team, we had three days to come up with the Mentors in Design Award (MIDDIES). With Ivo leaving that day for Italy to search for the perfect stone for this high-profile award, the pressure was on.
During Patti’s visit, she saw that mentoring is something that happens every minute of every day at Cumar. As one of the most respected and influential stone craftsmen in the world, Ivo is known for his ability to find the most unusual stones anywhere and make glamorous, brilliant objects out of them.  What I admire most about Cumar is that everyone has the opportunity to follow their dreams with Ivo as a natural mentor.  As a 7th generation stone master, Ivo wants to see future generations of his family pursue the business with his same passion and a spirit that sets the mood to mentor a top-performing team. Ivo teaches us something new daily about the stone we work with. The beauty of mentoring is that it knows no age.

As a team, we at Cumar are over flowing with talent and imagination but it takes a veteran talent, a person well-versed and who has first-hand experience to take all of our energy and channel it. With open arms, Ivo has embraced my dream to not only to flourish in my career but to allow me to bring my Over My Shoulder project into Cumar. Stay tuned – the dazzling award is currently in production and the Cumar team is pooling their expertise to create a mesmerizing icon that will become a treasured symbol of accomplishment in a mentor’s life. – Dawn Carroll
